Don’t Touch (My Hair) Collection was Miclectic Apparel’s debut collection.
In March 2016, I was at a networking event called Coffee and Chill. The conversation started..
“How is everyone?” it began.
“Honestly, I’m having a ‘don’t touch my hair’ kind of day.” someone said.
There was a slight pause, but everyone present knew EXACTLY what that metaphor meant. It was stated figuratively, but the statement said so much more than the literal meaning.
It’s as if she’d said:
Honestly, I’m having a ‘please don’t invade my bubble’ kind of day.
Honestly, I’m having a ‘what do I look like? a play thing’ kind of day.
Honestly, I’m having a ‘tired of you treating me less than human’ kind of day.
Honestly, I’m having a ‘treat me like you’d like to be treated’ kind of day.
Trust me, I could go on and on.
My first retort was, “girl make that into a t-shirt! I’d wear it.”
Several others agreed, and the idea never left my mind.
Finally, after much deliberation and a slight delay, here we are. Don’t Touch.
The aim with this statement and the designs in this collection is to bring attention to the wearer and allow them to vocalise their own truth on the topic. It’s a gateway for people who are unsure to ask; and a non-confrontational visual for those who may not want to address the issue outright.
This collection, and future collections will address/acknowledge issues in our everyday lives that some are just completely oblivious to. Whether one can relate or not, advocating and educating on behalf of others– or better still, finding some common ground and advocating for yourself, can make all the difference in the world.
